湘西凤凰-陈寅恪-清华园/Phoenix Old Town-Chen Yin Ke-Tsinghua(中文/English)

Dear friends,

    今年国庆节我和家人及朋友共10人去了向往已久的湘西凤凰古镇度假。这座历史文化名城，曾被新西兰著名作家路易﹒艾黎（Alley﹒Rewi）称赞为中国最美丽的小城。
  

  

  

  

 

    在愉快的四天里，更让我惊喜的是：上世纪三十年代清华大学国学研究院 陈寅恪教授——这位当代国学大师季羡林的老师——世界著名的汉学家和国学大师，其能畅读英法德日俄文，并通晓希伯来、拉丁等十余种文字，是中国目前唯一祖孙三代四人上了辞海的人。1926年6月，36岁的陈寅恪与梁启超、王国维并称“清华三巨头”。他朴素厚实，谦和而有自信，真诚而不伪饰，人称学者本色。他12岁即东渡日本留学，后去德国、瑞士、法国游学，又赴美国哈佛学习，博学而有见识。这位一生无文凭和学位的大师，被人们称为“教授中的教授”。中国近代史上三百年来，至今仍无人超越他的学识。

    陈寅恪先生祖居在凤凰古镇的古宅——陈宝箴旧居（寅恪先生的爷爷）对外开放了！这是我2005年到古镇未曾看到过的。后来了解到是2007年才开放的。

陈寅恪先生当年提倡的“独立之精神，自由之思想”，影响了许许多多清华学子，我亦多次在清华经管的校友活动中听学长们谈论过。这次古镇之行还能更加深入地了解寅恪先生许多鲜为人知的往事，瞻仰这个中国历史上目前唯一的“文化贵族”之家庭，实乃人生一大幸事。
    

    我们也参观了中国著名民族歌唱家宋祖英女士任名誉馆长的“三江苗族博物馆”。一进入大门，迎面而来的是苗族留美博士石超富先生题写的“bou dai xiong善良勇敢 智慧勤劳”一行字，在朱红色的大匾映衬下奕奕生辉。不禁让我对苗族的研究有了浓厚的兴趣。我知道这个地方60%的居民都是苗族人，人杰地灵，名贤辈出。从鸦片战争的民族英雄郑国鸿将军，到民国第一任民选内阁总理熊希龄，文学巨匠沈从文，国画大师黄永玉，中科院院士萧纪美……
 

    据查证有关史料知：世界上有两个民族的历史是由战争和迁徙写成的，那就是犹太民族和中国苗族。今天，大部分的犹太人和一部分苗族人流落分散到世界的许多角落，成为世界公民。而更多的苗族则在中国西南部的崇山峻岭之中定居下来，成为典型的高山民族。几千年过去了，在鲜为人知的大山深处，他们始终保持着祖先在部落时代的生活方式，创造出奇特的文明…… 

    有人将苗族服饰誉为“穿在身上的史书”。银饰与刺绣的结合是苗族服饰的特点。苗族信仰万物有灵论，图腾物为牛。苗族的祖先蚩尤驰骋中原时，其形象是“铜头铁角”。他们认为：铜可驱魔，铁可逐邪，银能祛病消灾。1905年，英国牧师伯格理(Rev. Samual Pollard) 从苗族传统服饰纹样中获得灵感，帮助创立了简明易学的拼音文字。民间称这套文字为“老苗文”，英语世界称之为“坡捡字母”（the Pollard Script）。

湘西凤凰风景秀丽，名胜古迹甚多。城内，古代城楼，明清古院风采依然。城外有南华山国家森林公园，城下艺术宫殿奇梁洞，建于唐代的黄丝桥古城，举世瞩目的南方长城……

      
凤凰是美丽的，静静的沱江，流淌着一种远离尘世的和谐和静谧；

凤凰是精巧的，踏着石板小路，登上吊脚楼，你会发现凤凰人其实生活得很精致；凤凰又是古老而神秘的，这座“深山里的城池”也拥有自己对往事的记忆。
啊，凤凰也是一个让我终生难忘的地方。

谨以此文献给我挚爱的清华和纪念我最尊敬的教授陈寅恪先生。

PS：10月17-19日三天我在北京参加清华经管的活动，并见到了部分老师和同学。我将手提电脑里存放的“爱是永不止息-2009爱与梦想成长夏令营”PPT给他们看时，得到了认可和支持。更为有趣的是，我小学同学Mr.Huo和他的夫人Ms.Peng一起请我吃饭时，聊到此事，他们告诉我，去年5.12四川大地震的第二天，他们就给四川红十字会汇去了四十万元现金。后来也有把灾区孩子接到北京过夏令营的善念，但因条件不成熟就没有做成。以后他们也会支持甘泉基金这个灾区帮助项目。当我举杯代表“四川灾区的小朋友”感谢他们是有责任感的企业家时。Ms.Peng谦卑地说：我们还不能称为“企业家”，我们只是做代理产品的老板。回成都后，我即查阅相关资料，对“企业家”的定义和注释。企业家（enterpriser）---企业内部掌握着资源配置最高权利的人。我摘录了汪纯宏先生写的一篇关于定义“企业家”的文章，放在附件里，供参考。My dear Ms.peng，你们完全佩得这个称号和荣誉。如果这个社会里有越来越多像你们这样有爱心和社会责任感的企业家，我相信，我们这个国家将会更加强大，社会将会更加美好和谐。最近，我的一个定居美国多年的朋友看了我转发的“慈善夏令营”邮件后回复我：（邮件原文稿）

（前几天一个成都的朋友和她的美国老公到我家小住几日。大地震时他们正在成都，这老外还曾在电视上大赞中国政府救灾的能力。我给他们讲起你们所作的一切，他也很感动。一个国家和社会的强盛，不在于富人的多少，而在于有良知的人有多少。中国的强盛，正让越来越多的人感受得到。）

  --- 想起以后某年我和团队带着小朋友到首都北京过夏令营，他们开心地看天安门，爬八达岭长城……

 微笑不由自主的浮现在我脸上。

Dear friends,

On this year’s National Day, I and my family members and friends, a total of 10 people, went to the long-yearning Fenghuang town in western Hunan for vacation. This historical city was once commended by the renowned New Zealand writer Alley Rewi as the most beautiful small town in China.

During the happy four days, what pleasantly surprised me is this: this is the home of Professor Chen Yinke (also Tschen Yin Koh) of the institute of Chinese studies of Tsinghua University in the 1930s—teacher of the contemporary sinologist Ji Xianlin. He is the world-famous sinologist and master of Chinese studies, speaking fluently English, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and thoroughly understanding Hebrew, Latin, and other ten languages. He and his grandfather and grandson are all listed as entries in the Chinese Encyclopedia, the only family in China up to present. On June, 1926, the 36 year-old Chen Yinke, along with Liang Qichao and Wang Guowei, were regarded as the “three giants of Tsinghua”. He was simple and profound, modest and confident, sincere and unpretending, with true scholarly traits. He studied in Japan when he was 12 years old, and latter went to Germany, Switzerland, France, and US Harvard, he was erudite and experienced. This master without diploma and degree is called “professor of professors” by people. In the modern Chinese history of 300 years, his learning was not rivaled until now.

Chen Yinke’s residence is an old house in Fenghuang-Chen Baozhen Residence (his grandfather) was open to visitors. This is what I did see in 2005. I learned that it was open in 2007. The idea of “independent spirit and free thought” advocated by Chen Yinke’s has affected many students of Tsinghua, I also heard of a lot of discussion of this by alumnus of Tsinghua SEM. This tour of the old town can also make me thoroughly understand many rarely known past events of him. It is a big lucky event to admire the only family of cultural aristocracy in Chinese history.

We also visited the “Sanjiang Miao Museum”, whose honory curator is the renowned Chinese nationality singer Ms. Song Zuying. Entering the front door, we saw the script of “Shanliang yonggan, zhihui qinlao” (mercy, brave, wise, and industrious) written by the Miao Dr. Shi Chaofu on US, shining under the red big plaque. This gave me strong interest to learn more on Miao studies. I know that 60% of the residents in this place are Miaos, producing many outstanding persons, from General Zheng Guohong, the national hero in the Opium War, to Xiong Xiling, the first elected Prime Minister in the Republic of China, to the literature great master Shen Congwen, traditional Chinese painting Master Huang Yongyu, and to the academician Xiao Jimei ......

According to the historical data: in the world two nations had their histories written by war and migration, they are the Jews and the Chinese Miaos. Today, the majority of Jews and a part of Miaos have dispersed into various parts of the world, becoming world citizen. But the majority of Miaos are settled down in high mountains at the north west China, becoming typical mountainous nation. Several thousand years have passed by, in the rarely-known deep mountains, they are keeping their ancestors’ tribal life style and creating an unusual civilization ......

The Miao’s clothing is honored as the “history on body”. Silver ornaments and embroidery feature Miao’s clothing. The Miao people believe in ghost of all things, their totem is the cow. When Miao's ancestor Chi You was galloping on the plain and wildness, his image is “copper head and iron antlers”. They thought: copper can expel the devil and iron may expel the evil, and silver can expel sickness and disaster. In 1905, a British pastor Rev. Samual Pollard got the inspiration from the Miao’s traditional clothing graphic patterns to help establish an easy to study alphabetic writing system, which was called as the Old Miao’s Letter, the Pollard Script by the English world.

The Fenghuang has beautiful landscape with many scenic spots and historic resorts. Inside the town, there are ancient towers and gates, and ancient courtyards of Ming and Qing Dynasties. Outside, there are the Nanhua mountain national forest park, the artistic underworld Qiliang Cave, Huangsiqiao old town built in Tang Dynasty, and the world-catching south Great Wall ......

Fenghuang is beautiful. The quite Tuojiang River flows a harmony and serenity far away from this mortal world. Fenghuang is exquisite. Treading on flagstone alleys, mounting the suspended houses over the water, you will find that the local person lead an exquisite life. Fenghuang is also ancient and mystical, this “twon in the remote mountains” also has its memory to past events.

Alas, fenghuang is also an unforgettable place of me.

 PS: on October 17-19, I participated in the activity of Tsinghua SEM in Beijing, and met some teachers and schoolmates. I shew the “Love never stops - 2009 love and dream summer camp” PPT in my computer to them, and received recognition and support. Interestingly, when my elementary schoolmate Mr.Huo and his wife Ms.Peng invited me to dinner, they told me that in the second day of last year;s 5.124 Sichuan earthquake, they remitted 400,000 yuan to Sichuan Red Cross. Afterward they also thought of taking some children of the disaster area to Beijing summer camp, but because the conditions are not available, this was not realized. They expressed their future support to Ganquan Foundation. When I raised the cup to thank them as being responsible entrepreneurs on behalf of the “children of Sichuan disaster areas”. Ms.Peng said humbly: We could not be called as “the entrepreneurs”, we are only business persons who sell products. After returning to Chengdu, I consulted dictionary on the definition and annotation of “entrepreneur”. Entrepreneur (enterpriser)---a highest-rank person within an enterprise who controls the resources. I have extracted a passage from an article by Mr. Wang Chunhong on the definition of “entrepreneur” as the appendix for reference. My dear Ms.peng, you are fully entitled to this title and the honor. If this society has more and more compassionate and responsible entrepreneurs like you, I believe that our country will be stronger, beautiful ,and more in harmony. Recently, a friend of mine who settled in US for many year replied me after reading the “charitable summer camp” forwarded by me: (original mail)

(a couple of days ago, a Chengdu's friend and her American husband lived in my house for several days. When the big earthquake happened, they were in Chengdu, this foreigner greatly praised the Chinese government’s ability of disaster relief on the television. I told your works to them, he was also very moved. A nation or a society's power does not depend on the number of rich people, but depend on the number of conscientious people. China's power was felt by more and more people. )
